What is Reflexology?

Picture
Reflexology is a form of Complementary Medicine, whose origins come from many varied and ancient backgrounds.

It is an Holistic treatment (which means it treats you as a whole being rather than just treating an isolated health problem) whose aim is to help the mind, body & spirit to work in harmony, which, then,  allows us to reach our optimum health, physically and mentally/emotionally.

Reflexology involves direct touch to reflex points (usually on the feet & ankles), which represent other parts of the body (internal & external). The stimulation of these reflex points encourages our energies to flow strongly and freely, which in turn affects our mental and physical states. Thus encouraging us towards homeostasis (balance).

This means that Reflexology can bring us to a better physical and mental/emotional state, improving our quality of life. It is also possible to maintain these improvements by having Reflexology regularly but less frequently.

So What is Clinical Reflexology?

Clinical Reflexology is an advanced form of Reflexology, meaning more training has been undertaken since the original basic qualification was gained.

This extra training involves learning more about the body, more about illnesses and health problems and learning advanced techniques to use during treatments.

It means that each treatment is tailored to your specific requirements rather than following a set pattern. It will, however, still always be an Holistic treatment.

What happens at a Reflexology treatment?

The first time you see Rita you will need to have a consultation (before the treatment), which can take up to 30 minutes.

Consultation

The consultation entails taking  some basic details about you, your health and your lifestyle, both past and present. You will need to bring details of any health problems you have, any medication you are taking and any other treatments that you are having.

First treatment

The first Reflexology treatment that you have will usually be a full general treatment with a minimum of advanced techniques. This is so that your system can get used to the changes that the treatment may make, and also, so that a basic assessment can be made.

However, should there be anything that needs to be dealt with immediately, such as pain, that will be included.

Subsequent treatments

Any subsequent treatments will be tailored to your specific needs, though they will still cover the whole system, just the emphasis on different aspects will change.

A Reflexology appointment will usually be for an hour (there are some exceptions such as when pregnant where this is shorter).
It will begin  with an update of how you have been since last seen.

This is followed by the treatment, and then a short discussion of what should happen next.

Please Note: You should never consume alcohol before a treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

It very much depends on why you are having Reflexology.

If you wish to relax a bit more and just maintain your healthy state then you can  choose to have treatments whenever it suits you.

If, however, you have specific problems/ailments you wish to address then initially a course of weekly treatments is advised.

I usually recommend that we begin with weekly treatments for about four weeks. The situation and progress is then reviewed and the frequency of any further treatments is assessed.

A review is made at every treatment of the need for further treatments and when they should ideally be. But you are always in control of whether you follow these recommendations.

If you have suffered from a condition for a long time, it will most likely take longer to improve.

Please Note: Most people enjoy the treatments so much that they look forward to the next one.

Who can benefit from Reflexology?
